[John, again, doesn't answer for a while. He's perfectly content to lay there, holding Aeryn close until the day passes. He hadn't realized how badly he had needed some contact, after forcing himself to push it away.

Even if the contact isn't really there.]

[He swallows thickly. It isn't hard to admit, but it doesn't make him hurt any less.]

[febrile]

Not always. [Which prompts a smile, buried down into the fabric of his shirt. She shouldn't be here. Shouldn't have done this to him.

She should go back to the streets full of clawing beggars and ravenous farseers.]

I think we can both agree I've made some stupid, stupid mistakes.

[crouton]

If you believed in them, then they weren't mistakes.

[John soaks up his time by staring at the ceiling.]

[febrile]

So [She starts, carefully, shifting her legs up onto the bed beside him so that she's laying down.] what is it that you believe in now?

[crouton]

I don't know.

[John searches her eyes, like he expects to find the answer there. He doesn't.]

I've changed.

[febrile]

So do we all. [She's not who she was when they'd first met. Not even close to it, and she doesn't care to go back.]

But that shouldn't be what's holding you back.

[crouton]

I believed in me. I believed in you. I think I still believe in us.

[His eyes move away from her's until they close.]

But I'm afraid.

[febrile]

This is the part where I remind you that you've always been scared for as long as I've known you. [Which, despite the edge of a smile that's not all there, isn't an insult as much as it is a jab.] One human crashing in through a wormhole and wrecking just about everything in his path.

[crouton]

No...not that kinda scared.

[She's not wrong, and maybe things would've ben simplier if he was just scared of the unknown. But John isscared because he knows exactly what he's gotten himself into, and he can't find a way out of it.

And what scares him more is that he isn't sure he wants to get out of it.]

[febrile]

[She sobers at that. Softens her voice and leans in across his chest as it rises and falls.] Then tell me how I can help.
